One jaunt º ³ ³º through 2009's thoroughly captivating From Afar º ³ ³º supports that notion, as the Finns were able to º ³ ³º brandish a mighty sonic sword that kept the º ³ ³º speed on 10, the jovial acoustics 'a hustling, º ³ ³º and above all else, managed to bring a sort of º ³ ³º mild sophistication to a style that is usually º ³ ³º anything but. Essentially, Ensiferum doesn't º ³ ³º play the stupid, folk metal game, and on Unsung º ³ ³º Heroes (their sixth overall), they manage to º ³ ³º stay the course with sterling results. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The clean vocal work of guitarist/founding º ³ ³º member Markus Toivonen and bassist Sami Hinkka º ³ ³º come across as the early, defining element here. º ³ ³º While the triumphant, trumpet-pumping bravado of º ³ ³º lead cut "In My Sword I Trust" is standard º ³ ³º Ensiferum fare, the melodic vocals of Toinoven º ³ ³º and Hinkka congeal with the band's sound in ways º ³ ³º they haven't quite fully exploited until now. º ³ ³º The title track and especially "Burning Leaves" º ³ ³º benefit most from their inclusion, adding a sort º ³ ³º of power metal but not power metal angle to the º ³ ³º proceedings. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º A vast portion of these songs don't seek out a º ³ ³º great deal of bombastic glory, preferring to º ³ ³º hitch their wagons to sturdy riffs and buoyant º ³ ³º melodies. "Last Breath" is perhaps the most º ³ ³º telling of this, as the band's trademark riff º ³ ³º style pumps out a few noticeable gems, º ³ ³º especially in the song's chorus. And perhaps as º ³ ³º a way to prove they still want to go the epic º ³ ³º route, album closer "Passion, Proof, Power" º ³ ³º clocks in at nearly 17 minutes, complete with º ³ ³º vast choirs, thus resonating as the album's most º ³ ³º adventurous and tried-and-true moment. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Considering the only real competition Ensiferum º ³ ³º has is Eluveitie and Tyr, they appear more than º ³ ³º willing to settle into their mid-years as a º ³ ³º reliable, take-no-chances ensemble. Unsung º ³ ³º Heroes doesn't have the sort of boundless energy º ³ ³º its predecessor has, yet it's the kind of album º ³ ³º that spews quality, and it's quite possible we º ³ ³º underscored this one.
