He was also º ³ ³º something of a crusader, making nuclear war the º ³ ³º subject of several songs during the Reagan º ³ ³º years. Perhaps Moore's best all around album in º ³ ³º the 80's was Wild Frontier, released in 1987. º ³ ³º The songs were full of emotion, the production º ³ ³º excellent, and the musicianship outstanding, as º ³ ³º Moore's fiery guitar playing was tempered with a º ³ ³º more bluesy vibe, backed by keyboards. With º ³ ³º Moore's singing under control and conveying more º ³ ³º feeling, Wild Frontier was one of the best º ³ ³º melodic hard rock albums of the late 80's. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Moore's follow up, After the War, released in º ³ ³º 1989, is similar to Wild Frontier from a º ³ ³º production and sound standpoint. Although there º ³ ³º are some great tracks, overall the material is a º ³ ³º mixed musical bag, lacking the cohesiveness of º ³ ³º Wild Frontier. This time around, Moore seems to º ³ ³º be interested in lightening things up a bit. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Speak For Yourself, is an incredible power º ³ ³º rocker, with some incendiary guitar work that º ³ ³º ranks among Moore's very best. Running From the º ³ ³º Storm is melodic, and has the impact of a gale º ³ ³º force wind, with more great lead work. The title º ³ ³º track, After the War, is a catchy tune with º ³ ³º great vocals with a familiar antiwar message. º ³ ³º Incorporating traditional Celtic melodies is º ³ ³º something that both Moore and Thin Lizzy had º ³ ³º done before, and it works quite well on the dark º ³ ³º and brooding, Blood and Emeralds. Originally a º ³ ³º bonus track, Moore's impressive cover of blues º ³ ³º master Roy Buchanan's instrumental, Messiah Will º ³ ³º Come Again, adds more dark favors to the mix. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The ultra syrupy Livin' on Dreams, is pure pop º ³ ³º rock, and is kind of new territory for the º ³ ³º usually feisty Irishman. Moore's aggressive, raw º ³ ³º style of singing featured on This Thing Called º ³ ³º Love is kind of a throwback to his early 80's º ³ ³º style. A change of pace number that does kind of º ³ ³º work, is the bouncy Ready for Love, which after º ³ ³º another over the top guitar solo, brings in some º ³ ³º soulful female background vocals. Led Clones, º ³ ³º features Ozzy Osbourne singing on a Kashmir º ³ ³º influenced track, about bands borrowing from Led º ³ ³º Zeppelin. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The musicians are hard rock heavyweights. º ³ ³º Bassist Bob Daisley (Ozzy Osbourne/Rainbow/Uriah º ³ ³º Heep), and keyboard player Neil Carter (UFO), º ³ ³º return after having also played on Wild º ³ ³º Frontier. Also contributing are Don Airey º ³ ³º (Rainbow/MSG/Whitesnake) on keyboards, and Cozy º ³ ³º Powell (MSG/Jeff Beck/Black Sabbath/Rainbow) and º ³ ³º Simon Phillips (Toto/MSG/Judas Priest) on drums. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Gary Moore seems to be exploring some new º ³ ³º musical directions on After the War, the results º ³ ³º being a somewhat uneven album. His creative lead º ³ ³º work is at times completely off the charts, but º ³ ³º a great solo doesn't always make for a great º ³ ³º song.
