It º ³ ³º assembles a high-quality, fairly balanced blend º ³ ³º of Def Leppard's finest power ballads and º ³ ³º rockers on one CD, give or take a few. In this º ³ ³º sense, it is the best choice for the many º ³ ³º listeners who probably only want to own one disc º ³ ³º from this important but far from album- º ³ ³º consistent pop metal band. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The task of compiling best-of collections for º ³ ³º music superstars certainly is not the most º ³ ³º enviable enterprise one could take on. After º ³ ³º all, fans will never all agree on the final º ³ ³º tally. Still, this particular collection commits º ³ ³º a cardinal but common mistake in overvaluing the º ³ ³º artist's most recent material and thereby º ³ ³º squeezing out essential tunes. I mean, who could º ³ ³º possibly argue that a song like "Have You Ever º ³ ³º Needed Someone So Bad?" trumps "Too Late for º ³ ³º Love." º ³ ³º Still, despite that particular flaw this º ³ ³º collection dips into Def Leppard's vault and º ³ ³º generally pulls out keepers. "Photograph" and º ³ ³º "Foolin'," two of the standout tracks from the º ³ ³º band's breakthrough album, Pyromania, are º ³ ³º thankfully and appropriately here. The near- º ³ ³º perfect ballad "Love Bites" and the title track º ³ ³º are the two best songs from Def Leppard's º ³ ³º masterpiece, Hysteria, and they're here as well. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Beyond that, this disc remains a solid if not º ³ ³º exceptional listen, cranking out the band's º ³ ³º essential rockers like "Animal" and "Rock of º ³ ³º Ages" and not scrimping on offerings from the º ³ ³º huge-selling Hysteria album. The key problem º ³ ³º with Vault is that it probably contains too many º ³ ³º songs given the selection scheme. After all, º ³ ³º while Def Leppard certainly qualifies as one of º ³ ³º the best hard rock, arena rock and pop metal º ³ ³º bands in rock music history, the band doesn't º ³ ³º hold up in quite the same way in a broader, less º ³ ³º genre-specific examination.
