His musical career spans over 50 º ³ ³º years and he initially started as a boy by º ³ ³º playing trumpet and French horn. He then moved º ³ ³º onto bass and finally onto vocals. His first º ³ ³º record was released in 1958 and the rest, as º ³ ³º they say, is history. He was an accomplished º ³ ³º songwriter, producer and sang with Rainbow, º ³ ³º Black Sabbath, Heaven And Hell and also enjoyed º ³ ³º success with his own band Dio. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º He possessed a powerful, soaring voice with º ³ ³º vocal range that was fantastic both on record º ³ ³º and live. I could go on for hours about his º ³ ³º amazing voice but to put it simply he is, º ³ ³º without doubt, one of the best rock singers º ³ ³º every heard. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º On the 19th March UMC are releasing the first º ³ ³º three Dio albums ('Holy Diver', 'The Last In º ³ ³º Line' and 'Sacred Heart') as Deluxe Editions º ³ ³º with re-mastered original albums and a second CD º ³ ³º of other material. Very similar to the Black º ³ ³º Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Def Leppard issues we º ³ ³º have already seen released. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º 'Sacred Heart', released in October 1985, was º ³ ³º the third album Dio released with his band and º ³ ³º consisted of Jimmy Bain (bass) Claude Schnell º ³ ³º (keyboards), Vinny Appice (drums) and Vivian º ³ ³º Campbell (guitar). This was Campbell's last º ³ ³º album with Dio, but more of that later. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Disc one is the original release re-mastered. º ³ ³º Arguably not the best of his 80s releases but º ³ ³º for me it is still one of the best albums of the º ³ ³º era. The album is full of Ronnie's trademarks - º ³ ³º strong melodies, fantastic vocals and lots of º ³ ³º references to Medieaval times. It also has some º ³ ³º great guitar work, solid rhythms and some º ³ ³º beautiful keyboard work intertwined to give the º ³ ³º songs that extra dimension. I'm not going to do º ³ ³º a track by track review as I think we all º ³ ³º probably owned the original vinyl or cassette º ³ ³º version and bought the CD when it came out. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I was a little unsure if a remaster was really º ³ ³º worth the effort as I thought the original CD º ³ ³º version was good enough, however I was wrong. º ³ ³º The separation and clarity on Disc one is º ³ ³º fantastic. I compared it to my original CD and º ³ ³º right across the instruments it's clearer and º ³ ³º not quite as heavy on the bass end of the mix º ³ ³º making it a little brighter sounding, which I º ³ ³º prefer. The vocals sit better in the mix and the º ³ ³º backing vocals are clearer. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The highlights of the remaster are exactly the º ³ ³º same as the original for me - the absolute º ³ ³º storming opener 'King Of Rock And Roll' followed º ³ ³º by 'Sacred Heart' and my all-time favourite Dio º ³ ³º song 'Rock And Roll Children'. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Disc two starts with 'Hide In The Rainbow' (Dio º ³ ³º EP), 'We Rock', 'Last In Line' (both Live B- º ³ ³º Sides - 'Rock N Roll Children') and 'Like the º ³ ³º Beat Of A Heart' (Live B-Side 'Hungry For º ³ ³º Heaven'). We then get the 'Intermission' album º ³ ³º in full. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º 'Intermission' was a live album released in º ³ ³º 1986. The live songs were recorded during the º ³ ³º first leg of the 'Sacred Heart' Tour. However º ³ ³º Campbell left the band after this first leg of º ³ ³º the tour for what I can only really describe as º ³ ³º 'musical differences!' The band enlisted º ³ ³º guitarist Craig Goldy for the rest of the tour º ³ ³º and for the next album 'Dream Evil'. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º On the 'Intermission' album Campbell plays the º ³ ³º live solos with Godly credited as doing "over- º ³ ³º dubbed rhythm guitar on the live tracks". In º ³ ³º addition, halfway through the live tracks is a º ³ ³º studio track ('Time To Burn') which was put on º ³ ³º as the band wanted something from the new line º ³ ³º up. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I still feel the same about 'Intermission' now º ³ ³º as I did when it came out a cracking live album º ³ ³º spoilt by a studio track in the middle. The º ³ ³º studio track always spoilt the flow of the live º ³ ³º songs and it still does, at least now we have º ³ ³º the option to create a playlist and put it first º ³ ³º or last! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The live tracks capture Dio doing what he did º ³ ³º best - singing live. Stand out tracks for me are º ³ ³º 'Rock 'N' Roll Children'/'Long Live Rock 'N' º ³ ³º Roll'/'Man On The Silver Mountain' which are º ³ ³º really done as medley and show off Dio's voice º ³ ³º perfectly. The rest of the band sound excellent º ³ ³º and were pretty much at the top of their game at º ³ ³º this time with Campbell showing just how good he º ³ ³º would become and Appice/Bain holding the rhythm º ³ ³º rock solid. It's just a pity that we lose a lot º ³ ³º of the keyboards in the mix. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I don't have 'Intermission' on CD so I couldn't º ³ ³º do a comparison with this new version. However I º ³ ³º suspect it has not been remastered as it still º ³ ³º sounds like a normal live album with very little º ³ ³º separation of the instruments and very little º ³ ³º keyboard coming through at times. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As with a lot of these Deluxe releases there is º ³ ³º always the question, "should I buy it?" After º ³ ³º all we probably already have it at least once. º ³ ³º Personally I can be a bit cynical about these º ³ ³º releases but on this one I think it's worth º ³ ³º buying.
