Although prima-donna guitar players º ³ ³º are a dime a dozen and most of them can shred º ³ ³º when they feel like it, Schenker was a riff º ³ ³º monster and laid down some totally face-melting º ³ ³º solos. If more people outside of England had º ³ ³º actually heard “Lights Out,” UFO and Schenker º ³ ³º would be on the same household name recognition º ³ ³º level as fellow badass Phil Lynott. This isn’t º ³ ³º to say that UFO was as awesome as Thin Lizzy, º ³ ³º but there is a strong correlation between their º ³ ³º styles. Mainly, the style of big-time riffage, º ³ ³º catchy choruses, and a slight pop feel that was º ³ ³º still gritty enough to qualify as a manly º ³ ³º grilling album, as opposed to KISS, who employed º ³ ³º a similar style but had the misfortune of the º ³ ³º fact that 64% of their fans menstruate on a º ³ ³º monthly basis. Females don’t jam UFO or Thin º ³ ³º Lizzy, and therein lays the quintessential º ³ ³º difference. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º “Lights Out” the song is an exercise in titanic º ³ ³º guitar riffs and solos, and album opener “Too º ³ ³º Hot To Handle” is about 97% as awesome. The º ³ ³º remaining album is in a similar vein, with º ³ ³º layers of pop and big time power ballads thrown º ³ ³º in the mix. “Love To Love” is one of those 7 º ³ ³º minute ballads that consistently changes between º ³ ³º rocking out and getting sensitive, i.e. the º ³ ³º blueprint for any memorable classic rock ballad. º ³ ³º “Just Another Suicide,” “Getting Ready,” and º ³ ³º “Electric Phase” are pretty much º ³ ³º interchangeable, up-tempo riff rockers that º ³ ³º could have easily landed on 70’s rock radio. On º ³ ³º a record full of strengths that plays well to º ³ ³º its genre, the only points of weakness can be º ³ ³º found on “Try Me,” which is definitely not a º ³ ³º manly power ballad and thus is grossly out of º ³ ³º place, and “Alone Again Or,” which would be º ³ ³º better suited on an early Journey album.
