Â³Âº        Throughout the 70's UFO were slowly perfecting          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        their own individual brand of hard rock which           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        culminated in their peak period, both in terms          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        of quality and popularity, at around the time           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        their excellent double-live set 'Strangers In           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        The Night' was released.                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        This particular album serves as an almost               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        perfectly logical musical stepping stone from           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the rawer and more basic sounding 'Force It' to         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the classic 'Lights Out'. The 'Lights Out' album        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        was probably the one where it all came together         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        and along with 'Obsession' marks the high point         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        of the band's studio work but there are plenty          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        of signs on 'No Heavy Petting' of what is to            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        come. The music itself could be accused of              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        slightly lacking the energy and committment             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        displayed on 'Force It' but the band are more           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        assured on here and sound a lot more mature than        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        on previous efforts.                                    Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Standard rocker 'Natural Thing' gets things             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        underway followed by the superb ballad 'I'm A           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Loser' with it's trademark Michael Schenker             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        solo. These are the most well known tracks on           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the album and became live favourites over the           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        years. Fans of hard rock sometimes give short           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        shrift to genre ballads but UFO virtually               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        perfected the art and delivered some of the best        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        examples of this oft maligned format; 'I'm A            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Loser' is one of their best. However, the real          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        gems are to be found among the less well known          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        tracks. 'Can You Roll Her' is propelled along by        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Danny Peyronnel on the keyboards with such              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        energy it's hard not to be caught up in the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        sheer enthusiasm of it all and Schenker is again        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        on top form with a driving solo that suits the          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        song perfectly. 'Reasons Love' opens with a             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        typically electric Schenker riff and although           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        this isn't enough to save the song from dipping         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        into mediocrity there are indications of what is        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        to come in UFO's music in the way that Schenker         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        is so busy throughout the song adding fills and         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        little bursts of lead guitar throughout the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        verses. The standout track is probably 'On with         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the Action'. It is Pete Way's only songwriting          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        contribution, but what a contribution it is ! A         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        slow chugging slice of melodic heavy rock               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        featuring a great Schenker solo which should            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        have become a live staple. Album closer 'Martian        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Landscape' with it's heavily tremeloed keyboard         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        intro is unlike anything else on the album and          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        tips a hat to the space-rock origins of the band        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        before developing into an entertaining little           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        song with a wonderfully catchy chorus.                  Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        You may have noticed that the name 'Michael             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Schenker'appears quite often throughout this            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        review. UFO were always capable of decent               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        songwriting and Phil Mogg at his best was a             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        great vocalist who contributed a lot to the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        band's sound but Schenker is a lot more than            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        just the icing on the cake here. His influence          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        on this album cannot be underestimated and his          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        contributions rescue even the weaker tracks from        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        filler status.                                          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        If you fancy a bit of prime 70's hard rock with         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        melodic sensibilities alongside some classic            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        lead guitar work you could do a lot worse than          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        check out 'No Heavy Petting'.                           Âº Â³
