Hipgnosis had º ³ ³º been employed to provide cover art on every UFO º ³ ³º album from Phenomenon all the way through to º ³ ³º Lights Out and while some of the designs were º ³ ³º quite memorable none of them ever featured º ³ ³º pictures of the band. The cover art for º ³ ³º 'Obsession' is a typically weird Hipgnosis º ³ ³º affair with two guys in suits staring out at you º ³ ³º with what look like ballbearing's in their eyes º ³ ³º but...it's got a picture of Michael Schenker º ³ ³º too. Not the band, not Mogg and Schenker, just º ³ ³º the guitarist..on his own. It's almost as if the º ³ ³º band are saying 'hey, we are not just UFO we are º ³ ³º UFO featuring Michael Schenker, there he is º ³ ³º look, he's great isn't he, buy this and you can º ³ ³º hear him playing in UFO'. There could just as º ³ ³º likely be any number of reasons why he is on º ³ ³º there but whatever the motivations are behind º ³ ³º the cover art it's quite obvious that Schenker º ³ ³º was by now the most important member of the band º ³ ³º whether he was on the cover or not. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Schenker was important to UFO not just as their º ³ ³º resident guitar hero. He also formed the core º ³ ³º writing partnership with Phil Mogg which º ³ ³º produced most of the band's best work. To say º ³ ³º that the departure of Schenker after this º ³ ³º release left a hole in the band would be º ³ ³º something of an understatement. But I'm skipping º ³ ³º ahead here, he did contribute to 'Obsession' and º ³ ³º the album we have here is maybe not quite the º ³ ³º best thing UFO ever did but it's certainly the º ³ ³º most interesting. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Album opener 'Only You Can Rock Me' is a bog º ³ ³º standard UFO composition which wouldn't sound º ³ ³º out of place on any of their previous releases - º ³ ³º a mid-tempo hard rock number with a decent hook º ³ ³º and a melodic chorus. However, the band take º ³ ³º things up a notch with the vicious 'Pack It Up º ³ ³º And Go', an absolutely electric track with Andy º ³ ³º Parker pounding out the beat with brutal º ³ ³º precision and Mogg giving one of his best ever º ³ ³º vocal performances. UFO had never sounded so º ³ ³º downright committed as this before. Almost as an º ³ ³º apology for the subsequent minute of recorders º ³ ³º and a strummed guitar that is 'Arbory Hill' the º ³ ³º band launch into the excellent 'Ain't No Baby' º ³ ³º which manages to pack into 4 minutes virtually º ³ ³º all the elements that UFO became famous for - º ³ ³º tasteful slowburn hard rock, glorious melodies, º ³ ³º busy lead guitar and great solos. Another º ³ ³º highlight is 'One More For The Rodeo' on which º ³ ³º Schenker goes to town and almost drives the º ³ ³º whole song with endlessly inventive lead guitar º ³ ³º flourishes. Schenker was renowned for his º ³ ³º technical ability but there is no wankery on º ³ ³º here. The solos never outstay their welcome and º ³ ³º seem to fit within the framework of each song º ³ ³º perfectly. A proper UFO album usually has it's º ³ ³º fair share of ballads and 'Obsession' is no º ³ ³º exception. 'Cherry' is quite mediocre but º ³ ³º 'Looking Out for No.1' employs a string section º ³ ³º to great effect and album closer 'Born To Lose' º ³ ³º is beautiful in its simplicity while featuring º ³ ³º one of Schenker's best solos. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º 'Obsession' is by no means as straightforward º ³ ³º and consistent as the previous release 'Lights º ³ ³º Out' but there is an extra dimension to their º ³ ³º sound on here. It's altogether darker, more º ³ ³º atmospheric and definitely feels weightier than º ³ ³º anything they had ever done. º ³ ³º It's a shame that Schenker decided to quit the º ³ ³º band after this album. 'Obsession' finds UFO º ³ ³º moving away from their comfort zone in places º ³ ³º and it would have been interesting to see where º ³ ³º the Mogg/Schenker writing team would have gone º ³ ³º from here.
