The guitarist, Laurence Archer, º ³ ³º although very competent, lacked Schenkers º ³ ³º originality and many of the tracks left you º ³ ³º thinking 'that sounds familiar ..'. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Not so with 'Walk on Water' ! The Schenker/Mogg º ³ ³º writing partnership has never been so strong, º ³ ³º and the years of separate projects has added a º ³ ³º new dimension. Moggy's voice is superb º ³ ³º throughout, and Schenker, well he's Schenker ! º ³ ³º Lot's of over indulgent solos and fills... but º ³ ³º then that's what everybody wants ! You get the º ³ ³º feeling that after joining up with Robin McAuley º ³ ³º his guitar playing seemed to become more º ³ ³º 'adjusted', you would forever be hearing this º ³ ³º wonderful guitar sound that drifted around not º ³ ³º particularly taking any notice of the song, and º ³ ³º then WALLOP a perfectly timed attack, a mind º ³ ³º blowing solo complementing the music to º ³ ³º perfection. This sound, now very much a º ³ ³º characteristic of his, is carried over to the º ³ ³º 'new' UFO. The last time he was a member of UFO º ³ ³º it was his youthful arrogance that provided the º ³ ³º spark, now you feel it's so much more, and it º ³ ³º makes a difference. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º It would be wrong to stop with Mogg and Schenker º ³ ³º though. UFO wouldn't be UFO without the backup º ³ ³º of Way on bass (what more can be said about the º ³ ³º guy ! I saw him on the 'High Stakes .. ' tour º ³ ³º and even then he was staggering about the stage º ³ ³º as if it was nineteen seventy something !), and º ³ ³º the keyboard skills of Paul Raymond are very º ³ ³º much evident adding that extra UFO sparkle º ³ ³º (incidently, Raymond is also credited with some º ³ ³º of the rhythm guitar parts). And an honourable º ³ ³º mention for Andy 'no neck' Parker ... I must º ³ ³º admit I never really listen to the drums, but if º ³ ³º he was doing something wrong, I'm sure you'd º ³ ³º notice. And of course, you can't forget the º ³ ³º sixth member of the group, Ron Nevison who º ³ ³º produced the whole thing, it's nice to see that º ³ ³º the publicised parting of the ways in the early º ³ ³º eighties has been patched up. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The album itself is a typical UFO sort of thing, º ³ ³º your heavy ones, your lighter ones, and a well º ³ ³º thought out running order. The album starts with º ³ ³º a full in-your-face, almost, dare I say it, º ³ ³º 'grungy' riff which pretty much runs throughout º ³ ³º the song, except for the quieter chorus. The º ³ ³º heavier sound of this track, 'A Self Made Man', º ³ ³º to give you an idea, would fit in very well on º ³ ³º the last Kiss studio effort, 'Revenge', though º ³ ³º Mogg would have to growl the lyrics a bit more º ³ ³º to get a better effect ! Thank God he doesn't ! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The next track, 'Venus' starts off with º ³ ³º keyboards, and then to acoustic guitar, another º ³ ³º very prominent feature of the album. Unlike the º ³ ³º 70's albums however the acoustic guitar in º ³ ³º question is the same one used for Michaels º ³ ³º recent 'Thank You' album, and MSG unplugged º ³ ³º efforts, so has electric overtones but is still º ³ ³º used to good effect. No more so than a later º ³ ³º track, 'Running On Empty'. Here it is an º ³ ³º acoustic riff used to hold the song together, º ³ ³º with electric playing over it ... midway through º ³ ³º the song though, you get a short break, you know º ³ ³º it's time for a Schenker solo .... and in comes º ³ ³º an acoustic guitar solo, almost taking you º ³ ³º totally by surprise. I must admit the first time º ³ ³º I heard it it was almost unnerving, but on the º ³ ³º second time through you realise that it actually º ³ ³º works very well, would UFO have been prepared to º ³ ³º break the rules like this 15 years ago ? There º ³ ³º is still some electric extravagance as an outro º ³ ³º solo though, just so you don't forget it's there º ³ ³º ! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º 'Pushed To The limit', a song about getting old º ³ ³º (!) (my woman says it ain't right/for a man my º ³ ³º age to fight) again is carried off with º ³ ³º perfection, the distinctive riff still going º ³ ³º round your head hours after you hear it, and º ³ ³º 'Stopped By A Bullet (of love)' is your token º ³ ³º love song .... this may be pure speculation, but º ³ ³º perhaps written by Schenker for his girlfriend, º ³ ³º and now band manager, Bella ? If anyone can º ³ ³º confirm this I'd be interested to know ! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º 'Darker Days' is where the title track for the º ³ ³º album comes from, and highlights several º ³ ³º religious themes occasionally cropping up in the º ³ ³º other tracks, which again I assume can be put º ³ ³º down to Michaels 'recent' religious awakening. º ³ ³º Whatever the motivation though it's another º ³ ³º catchy number, with Moggy's voice on º ³ ³º particularly good form. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The next two tracks, 'Running On Empty' º ³ ³º (mentioned earlier) and 'Knock, Knock' bear a º ³ ³º similar theme of love gone wrong, the latter º ³ ³º with the very catchy phrases along the lines of º ³ ³º 'knock,knock,knock/she got the house and the º ³ ³º car/the only thing left is my old guitar'. This º ³ ³º has a very "Fool For Love' type feel to it, not º ³ ³º just lyrically (stating off with everything nice º ³ ³º and rosy .... then enter the real world !) but º ³ ³º musically too. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The last original song of the album is then a º ³ ³º quieter affair about being down on your luck (in º ³ ³º fact the last three original songs don't paint a º ³ ³º rosy picture really !), and just finishes off º ³ ³º the album nicely .. no sudden heavy riffs º ³ ³º crashing in unexpectantly. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Finally we get two reworkings of UFO classics. º ³ ³º The first up is 'Doctor, Doctor'. Oh no ! I Hear º ³ ³º you cry, they're going to ruin it ! But no ! º ³ ³º It's actually very good, and I now prefer it to º ³ ³º the original. The basic song is very faithful to º ³ ³º the original, the difference is Schenkers º ³ ³º majestic guitar 'frills' throughout, adding just º ³ ³º that little bit more. The new 'Lights Out' º ³ ³º however, just adds a little 90's production, º ³ ³º without really altering much else (unless I've º ³ ³º missed something !) ... but apparently this song º ³ ³º is only to appear on the Japanese release º ³ ³º anyway. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º So, in summary .... if you haven't got a copy º ³ ³º yet ....
