There's been an abundance of º ³ ³º reunion concerts to satisfy the public's need º ³ ³º for a return to arena rock, and UFO is one of º ³ ³º the bands that actually have never taken too º ³ ³º long of a break since forming in 1969. The º ³ ³º British rockers are back in 2009 with a new CD º ³ ³º The Visitor, which once again takes a small step º ³ ³º away from their 1970's catalogue primarily º ³ ³º because of Vinnie Moore's guitar work. Since º ³ ³º replacing Michael Schenker a few years back, º ³ ³º Moore has actually brought a fresh, intriguing º ³ ³º quality to UFO, even when the base songwriting º ³ ³º isn't anything out of the ordinary. The Visitor º ³ ³º marks UFO's 20th studio album, and in many ways º ³ ³º it gives a nod to the bluesmen who inspired the º ³ ³º legendary rock bands of the 1970's. The opening º ³ ³º track Saving Me starts things out beautifully º ³ ³º with its delta-blues intro, fueled by Moore's º ³ ³º acoustic slide work. It quickly morphs into an º ³ ³º outright rock number, but there's a grittiness º ³ ³º that pulls you in. Original vocalist Phil Mog º ³ ³º still has chops, although his delivery might not º ³ ³º be quite as vibrant as his early work. The blues º ³ ³º sound rears its head in the vast majority of the º ³ ³º 10-track CD, with Saving Me and the later track º ³ ³º Rock Ready are the most faithful to the genre. º ³ ³º Moore's hand is heavy in a good deal of The º ³ ³º Visitor, and thankfully so. His mastery at º ³ ³º combining beautiful lead lines and grooving º ³ ³º rhythms is what elevates The Visitor to a º ³ ³º different level. Living Proof shows the band at º ³ ³º its collective best, not to mention that it º ³ ³º combines all the best elements of Moore's º ³ ³º playing. Of course, it's hard to ignore the º ³ ³º solos, which abound on the CD particularly when º ³ ³º you compare it to most of the other rock albums º ³ ³º out today. Moore brings us back to the 1980's in º ³ ³º that sense, and it is actually quite refreshing º ³ ³º to hear the songs take a completely different º ³ ³º path once Moore lays down his solo. I'd be very º ³ ³º hard-pressed to single out the best solo on The º ³ ³º Visitor, as they are all actually quite º ³ ³º impressive. The songwriting might not be the º ³ ³º most innovative and in many ways hearkens back º ³ ³º to 1980's metal, but UFO's new material is a lot º ³ ³º more interesting than some other classic rock º ³ ³º bands out there that have attempted to recreate º ³ ³º their original sound. Granted, Michael Schenker º ³ ³º is a force of nature in his own right, and it's º ³ ³º very possible that the guitarist would have º ³ ³º matched creativity with Moore. Even so, at the º ³ ³º age of 44, Moore is outstandingly at the top of º ³ ³º his game. // 8 º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Lyrics: It was mentioned earlier that many of º ³ ³º the songs on The Visitor have a 1980's metal º ³ ³º vibe, and the lyrics tend to follow suit. º ³ ³º There's a good deal of your run-of-the-mill rock º ³ ³º topics whether that includes being a renegade º ³ ³º (Villains & Thieves) or how there will be hell º ³ ³º to pay (Stranger In Town) but the content is º ³ ³º enjoyable for the most part. The ballad Forsaken º ³ ³º takes more of a serious, sentimental turn, but º ³ ³º it's usually the bluesier, rawer tracks that are º ³ ³º the most memorable. // 7 º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Overall Impression: The Visitor shows UFO at º ³ ³º its most blues-driven, and the addition of º ³ ³º acoustic slide is perfect. Everyone in the band º ³ ³º is a quality player, but it's hard for Vinnie º ³ ³º Moore to not become the main focus of each º ³ ³º track. The guitarist just has a keen sense of º ³ ³º adding textures/tones to the tracks, and that º ³ ³º saves a few tracks on the record from being just º ³ ³º mediocre.
