Instead of a new º ³ ³º platter of original material, David Coverdale º ³ ³º instead decided to take a look back at his time º ³ ³º with Deep Purple, and revisit some of those º ³ ³º classics from the Burn, Stormbringer, and Come º ³ ³º Taste the Band albums. Along with Reb Beach º ³ ³º (guitar), Michael Devin (bass), Tommy Aldridge º ³ ³º (drums), and Brian Ruedy (keyboards), the band º ³ ³º have put together a loving tribute to some truly º ³ ³º monumental songs, with the plan to tour the º ³ ³º world not only playing Whitesnake classics, but º ³ ³º many of these Deep Purple gems, most of which º ³ ³º haven't been played in concert by any Purple º ³ ³º family line-up in decades. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The first question many are probably asking, is º ³ ³º why make this album at all? Well, speaking as a º ³ ³º massive Deep Purple fan, it's about time someone º ³ ³º resurrected these old classics, and who better º ³ ³º than David Coverdale and Co. ? The second º ³ ³º question, the originals featured the vocal team º ³ ³º of Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, so who is going º ³ ³º to take over Hughes' parts if he is not involved º ³ ³º in the album? That part seems to have been º ³ ³º filled by a combination of Beach, Hoekstra, º ³ ³º Devin, and Ruedy, all of whom do a fantastic job º ³ ³º here recreating the soulful style of Hughes. And º ³ ³º how about Mr. Coverdale...is he up for the º ³ ³º challenge? Well, quite frankly he sounds º ³ ³º fabulous here, and right at home on these songs, º ³ ³º the majority of which he hasn't sang since the º ³ ³º '70s. Sure, "Burn", "Stormbringer", and º ³ ³º "Mistreated" were included in many live º ³ ³º Whitesnake sets over the years, but in total º ³ ³º much of what you'll hear on The Purple Album º ³ ³º will be tunes that the singer is revisiting for º ³ ³º the first time in ages. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º "Burn" kicks off the album, with Hoekstra and º ³ ³º Beach proving to be a formidable guitar team, º ³ ³º Aldridge pounding the skins like a madman, Ruedy º ³ ³º delivering a tasty keyboard solo, and Coverdale º ³ ³º shrieking as if he was a young man again. The º ³ ³º layers of vocals come out on a funky but heavy º ³ ³º take on "You Fool No One", and again, I'm not º ³ ³º sure exactly who is contributing Hughes' parts, º ³ ³º but they have done a fantastic job. The soulful º ³ ³º hard funk of "Love Child" is cranked up a notch, º ³ ³º this version even heavier than the original, and º ³ ³º "Sail Away" here is done acoustic style, and is º ³ ³º a revelation, as the band completely transforms º ³ ³º this one, Coverdale soaring to the heavens in º ³ ³º one of his many highlights here. "The Gypsy" is º ³ ³º also a major success, one of this writer's º ³ ³º favorites from this era of Purple, and the band º ³ ³º do it justice, with sizzling lead guitars flying º ³ ³º about the mix and more of those great dual vocal º ³ ³º melodies. "Lady Double Dealer" is given royal º ³ ³º heavy metal treatment, as Coverdale delivers a º ³ ³º nasty, venomous lead vocal, but he does an about º ³ ³º face and shows us just how much he has left on a º ³ ³º killer, bluesy version of "Mistreated", easily º ³ ³º the most successful song here and one that I º ³ ³º can't wait to hear live. The guitar solo is also º ³ ³º monumental, with a nod to Ritchie Blackmore but º ³ ³º not overly so. A strange choice for this album º ³ ³º is "Holy Man", which originally was a vehicle º ³ ³º for Glenn Hughes but Coverdale does a fine job º ³ ³º making it his own. The band lays down some º ³ ³º serious funk on "Might Just Take Your Life", and º ³ ³º then wows on the emotional "You Keep on Moving", º ³ ³º a powerful tune that is breathtaking here. The º ³ ³º gentle "Soldier of Fortune" is beautiful, as º ³ ³º Coverdale croons with his soft, mid-range tone, º ³ ³º and "Lay Down Stay Down" is locked and loaded, º ³ ³º the rhythms firing on all cylinders, the guitars º ³ ³º acrobatic, and the vocals sizzling. The º ³ ³º legendary "Stormbringer" closes out the set in º ³ ³º metallic fashion, a much heavier version than º ³ ³º the original that sees Hoekstra & Beach working º ³ ³º overtime. The deluxe edition also includes º ³ ³º "Comin' Home" and "Lady Luck", but these tracks º ³ ³º were not available for review. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Whether Coverdale's voice can handle belting º ³ ³º these tunes out on the upcoming tour remains to º ³ ³º be seen, but I think he's up for the challenge. º ³ ³º He's assembled a fine cast of musicians here who º ³ ³º can not only recreate all the instrumental parts º ³ ³º and add in their own identity, but also º ³ ³º contribute stellar vocals as well to help him º ³ ³º bring these songs back to life. Thankfully, the º ³ ³º band decided to give many of these songs a º ³ ³º slightly different spin, so it's not a 'note for º ³ ³º note' covers album, but a 'reimagining' so to º ³ ³º speak. It should prove to be an exciting tour, º ³ ³º and hopefully it prompts the band to get back in º ³ ³º the studio once it's over and crank out another º ³ ³º new album of all original material.
