When we talk about music, this can be º ³ ³º traumatizing not only for a band, but also its º ³ ³º fans. Not many acts out there can reinvent º ³ ³º themselves or maintain quality after said º ³ ³º changes, especially when they lose a key member. º ³ ³º Sometimes, though, this can be the best thing º ³ ³º that could happen. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º From a critical point of view, we can separate º ³ ³º Stratovarius’ extensive career into four eras: º ³ ³º In the first era, from its creation in 1985 to º ³ ³º 1994, we could see a more direct-driven º ³ ³º Stratovarius, performing power metal that had º ³ ³º less symphonic elements and a more classical º ³ ³º approach. The second one, from 1995 to 2000 º ³ ³º (and, to some extent, until 2003), featured what º ³ ³º I like to call their “golden era”, with a lot of º ³ ³º keyboards, powerful vocals and melodic anthems º ³ ³º that helped shape European power metal in the º ³ ³º 1990’s and put the genre and the band on the º ³ ³º map. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The third era, though, was marked by a lost and º ³ ³º confused Timo Tolkki, who started to digress º ³ ³º into a completely different approach to his º ³ ³º music, resulting in the horrible self-titled º ³ ³º album of 2005 and the near-implosion of the º ³ ³º group after it. With that being said, following º ³ ³º Tolkki’s departure, longtime fans were worried º ³ ³º if the band would get back on their feet or just º ³ ³º throw the towel and close shop. Luckily, Timo º ³ ³º Kotipelto and Jens Johansson chose the first º ³ ³º option. Taking control of the songwriting and º ³ ³º creative departments, the two gentlemen º ³ ³º recruited Matias Kupiainen and started the º ³ ³º fourth (and current) era for the band with º ³ ³º ‘Polaris’, a solid album, and their best since º ³ ³º ‘Destiny’ way back in 1998. This new º ³ ³º Stratovarius would then be recognized as a more º ³ ³º mature and centered band, with slightly º ³ ³º different arrangements to their songs and with º ³ ³º darker, more melancholic lyrics. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º All of this brings us to the release of º ³ ³º ‘Eternal’, the 16th full length by the group and º ³ ³º the fourth in this new era. Kotipelto (vocals), º ³ ³º Johansson (keyboards), Kupiainen (guitars), º ³ ³º Lauri Porra (bass) and Rolf Pilve (drums) offers º ³ ³º us a logical follow-up to ‘Nemesis’ music-wise, º ³ ³º featuring all the elements from the new º ³ ³º Stratovarius that we learned to love, a couple º ³ ³º of nostalgic arrangements here and there, and º ³ ³º even some Cain’s Offering influences on some º ³ ³º parts. The album starts with “My Eternal Dream”, º ³ ³º a characteristic tune with a strong chorus, fast º ³ ³º pace and lots of keyboards. “Shine in the Dark” º ³ ³º is presented as one of the more melodic songs of º ³ ³º the album and explicitly shows the Cain’s º ³ ³º Offering influence mentioned above. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Allied to those unfortunately are the two º ³ ³º weakest songs in the album, “Lost Without a º ³ ³º Trace” and “Fire in Your Eyes”, the latter being º ³ ³º a poor excuse for a ballad by a band that excels º ³ ³º on slow songs, as seen before on “Forever”, º ³ ³º “4000 Rainy Nights”, “Years Go By” and even º ³ ³º “When Mountains Fall”. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Aside from those two, songs like “Rise Above º ³ ³º It”, “Feeding the Fire” and “In My Line of Work” º ³ ³º all have plenty of good arrangements and º ³ ³º showcase what we expect from Stratovarius: º ³ ³º catchy tunes, plenty of energy, and mesmerizing º ³ ³º solos, which should definitely satisfy the º ³ ³º listener. The highlights of the album, however, º ³ ³º are the great “Man in the Mirror” and the º ³ ³º grandiose “Lost Saga”, an 11-minute opus filled º ³ ³º with cool riffs and a respectable performance by º ³ ³º Kotipelto, who by the way is sounding more º ³ ³º powerful than he has been in a long time. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º All in all, returning fans and casual listeners º ³ ³º alike should enjoy ‘Eternal’ almost in its º ³ ³º entirety, as it is not overly melodic or trying º ³ ³º to reinvent the wheel, instead relying on solid º ³ ³º performances and down-to-earth songwriting. º ³ ³º Oddly enough, it also relies heavily on a º ³ ³º tried-and-true formula, so it doesn’t actually º ³ ³º put anything new on the table, which can be a º ³ ³º downside.
