Â³Âº        The loss of Jeff Hanneman in 2013 was                   Âº Â³
Â³Âº        devastating to the music world. The riffs he            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        crafted with Slayer helped form an entire genre.        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Thrash took all the energy and rebellion of Iron        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Maiden and Judas Priest and channeled it into           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        pure rage. Furious riffs and merciless double           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        bass drums set the world ablaze, and Slayer,            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth,            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        found themselves at the forefront. Thirty-two           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        years into their career, they found enough rage         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        to record 10 albums and become rock gods in the         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        eyes of metal fans across the world. And then,          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        in the midst of writing their 11th album,               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Hanneman died of liver failure. The band would          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        continue, but it wouldn’t be the same. “After 30        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        years, it would literally be like starting              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        over,” said vocalist/bassist Tom Araya in an            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        interview with Blabbermouth. “To move forward           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        without Jeff just wouldn’t be the same, and I’m         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        not sure the fans would be so accepting of that         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        drastic a change.” Willing to accept it or not,         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        fans and curious listeners alike are about to be        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        on the receiving end of one hell of an assault.         Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Not wanting to lose momentum, they brought on           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Gary Holt, the guitarist for Exodus and one of          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Hanneman’s longtime friends, to play opposite           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Kerry King. They also welcomed the return of            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        drummer Paul Bostaph for the third time after           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Dave Lombardo’s firing in 2013. Along with              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        producer Terry Date, the band went into the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        studio in January of 2014, ready with two fully         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        recorded tracks and one partially written song          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        left behind by Hanneman, and just let loose all         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the fury and frustration against the                    Âº Â³
Â³Âº        circumstances that nearly ended Slayer as we            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        know it. The result, Repentless, is an album            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        with a title that’s “made up, but everyone              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        understands,” according to Araya, and a cover so        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        blasphemous it could only have come from Slayer.        Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        King and Holt’s riffs are fierce and unforgiving        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        throughout, and their steel-clad partnership            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        carries the entire album. “Take Control” begins         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        blisteringly fast, and the song is kept                 Âº Â³
Â³Âº        precisely on track with each and every tempo            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        shift by their masterful guitar work. “You              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Against You” features a pair of wildfire solos          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        that set the album alight. Bostaph’s 12-year            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        absence is easily forgotten as he helms the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        drums with a stunning level of skill. His               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        shining moment arrives early in the album on            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        “Cast the First Stone”, which finds him                 Âº Â³
Â³Âº        seamlessly shifting between a dominant barrage          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        of double bass and hi-hats to marching along            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        with every step of King and Holt’s riffs.               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Araya’s vocals, while having gained some gruff          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        with age, still underline the unbridled                 Âº Â³
Â³Âº        misanthropic rage that has fueled the band all          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        these years.                                            Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        The incendiary wrath on display here, so                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        unapologetic and infectious, makes this album           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        undoubtedly Slayer’s. “Vices” celebrates                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        violence as humanity’s greatest release; “A             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        little violence is the ultimate drug/ Let’s get         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        high,” Araya notes. Lines like these are the            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        reason Slayer is beloved. Frustration with a            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        world rife with injustice can become so                 Âº Â³
Â³Âº        overwhelming (especially if we lose a friend too        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        soon, as the band laments on the poignant               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        “Chasing Death”) that sometimes expressing our          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        innate aggression is the only way to find               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        release. We find our inner beasts in the riffs          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        and the drums and the primal screams and the            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        thrash itself, even if it’s just for 40 minutes         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        at a time. Here, we can let loose with little           Âº Â³
