Eight albums have been º ³ ³º published in total, mainly from 80's era. Some º ³ ³º of them content rare, outtakes or previously º ³ ³º unreleased songs as bonus tracks. Additionally, º ³ ³º some of the CD editions are accompanied by a DVD º ³ ³º with TV appearances, video-clips and or the band º ³ ³º talking about the making of the album. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The CD of this deluxe edition has six bouns º ³ ³º tracks, 5 demos and one cover of The Who. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The DVD includes the promo clips of the album, a º ³ ³º documentary with band members telling how it was º ³ ³º made and a documentary with live performances of º ³ ³º the band in their first tour into the URRS. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º ------------------------------------------------ º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Scorpions were at the top of their career by the º ³ ³º late 80’s Their hits were on radio and TV, their º ³ ³º stadium massive shows were sold out and their º ³ ³º popularity and fame were tremendous. It must º ³ ³º have been such a serious challenge to make º ³ ³º another great album, right after a true º ³ ³º successful classic like “Love At First Sting”. º ³ ³º No matter what the result of the following º ³ ³º record was, it would be condemned to be ignored º ³ ³º behind the huge impact of its predecessor. º ³ ³º That’s what happened with “Savage Amusement”, º ³ ³º Scorpions 10th studio full-lenght. However, º ³ ³º Meine and co. Definitely tried their best on it, º ³ ³º under the pressure of their record label and the º ³ ³º commercial common trends of those times. There’s º ³ ³º some fine moments here that shouldn’t be º ³ ³º forgotten, though. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Their intentions here are inevitably much more º ³ ³º commercial, leaving behind their distinctive º ³ ³º aggression and intensity for a while. The º ³ ³º current heavy metal sound of those days was º ³ ³º pretty simple, repetitive, melodic and truly º ³ ³º polished. Scorpions were forced in some way to º ³ ³º satisfy the requirements of those years and º ³ ³º include those elements in ther new compositions, º ³ ³º making them part of their philosophy. “Walking º ³ ³º On The Edge” or “Every Minute Everyday” show a º ³ ³º considerable change from anything they did º ³ ³º before. Melody has become absolutely º ³ ³º omnipresent; vocals take now all attention, very º ³ ³º insistent while instruments are relegated to º ³ ³º support them rather discreetly. The German º ³ ³º metallers simplify their methods to keep away º ³ ³º from their characteristic technique and certain º ³ ³º complexity to reach people’s ears easier. Their º ³ ³º commercial attempt on “Media Overkill” or the º ³ ³º ballad that failed, “Believe In Love”, becomes º ³ ³º excessively explicit and pretentious. Their º ³ ³º excellent performance and competent execution º ³ ³º make their music decent and amusing, but the º ³ ³º lack of the band’s usual roughness and strength º ³ ³º keeps it from being memorable. On other hand, º ³ ³º their formula is working suprisingly at times, º ³ ³º on “Passion Rules The Game” and “Rhythm Of º ³ ³º Love”, particularly, whose structures might be º ³ ³º repetitive and dumb, but their sound exquisite º ³ ³º and irresistible. The sweet voice of Klaus º ³ ³º becomes totally seductive once again, along with º ³ ³º the hypnotizing charming guitar lines. Those º ³ ³º became instant classics, featuring some º ³ ³º brilliance left among these wrongly focused º ³ ³º numbers. More exceptions can be found here, º ³ ³º luckily. Jabs & Schenker’s impressive harsh º ³ ³º riffs show no mercy on the devastating “We Let º ³ ³º It Rock...You Let It Roll” and the terminal º ³ ³º velocity of the pure speed metal track “Love On º ³ ³º The Run”. Scorpions couldn’t get rid completely º ³ ³º of their genuine attitude, power and brutality. º ³ ³º Those 2 are from the heaviest they ever did. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º During those times of cheesy ballads, MTV º ³ ³º videoclips and glam clothing fashion, the º ³ ³º pressure from recorld labels and producers º ³ ³º became bigger than ever before. Specially, on º ³ ³º popular legendary groups like these guys. Not º ³ ³º even Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple or º ³ ³º Accept, along with many NWOBHM victims of Def º ³ ³º Leppard influence, could escape from the º ³ ³º unstoppable destructive trends of those old º ³ ³º days. Scorpions either, although at least, they º ³ ³º kept some of their original intentions on this º ³ ³º album, as those 2 raging metal exceptions I º ³ ³º mentioned demonstrate. The general pattern here º ³ ³º goes further into that inoffensive mainstream º ³ ³º musical path, unfortunately. Guitars have been º ³ ³º reduced to be background support to the leading º ³ ³º vocals. The excess of voices and lyrical º ³ ³º repetition contributes to make these tunes º ³ ³º absolutely catchy and perfect to sing along. º ³ ³º Instrumentally mediocre and poorly conceived, º ³ ³º it’s such a shame they wasted the immense º ³ ³º potential of a combo of the level of Matthias º ³ ³º and Rudolf. Their guitars are still amazingly º ³ ³º merciless, with that violent slashing tone that º ³ ³º makes me tremble. Unfortunately, the º ³ ³º overproduced atmosphere and mixing doesn’t give º ³ ³º the 6 string section the presence and solidity º ³ ³º they crave. Vocals are what have become the main º ³ ³º attraction, and Klaus is completely brilliant on º ³ ³º giving them their appropriate texture, º ³ ³º modulation and emotion. His voice can be º ³ ³º touching and soft on the quietest compositions, º ³ ³º but also crude and wicked on the straighter º ³ ³º moments here. The song-writing is convincing º ³ ³º too, each track is well-developed and defined. º ³ ³º The weak spots are the persisting melody and the º ³ ³º supremacy of vocals, while this material gets º ³ ³º stripped down instrumentally. What could have º ³ ³º been heavy and hard turns into something º ³ ³º inoffensive, casual. The lyrics have been also º ³ ³º transformed into something more cheesy, away º ³ ³º from the group’s usual horny/kinky/explicit cool º ³ ³º words. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º After all, this is not that bad. Of course, this º ³ ³º LP is far from the glorious magnificence of º ³ ³º “Blackout” or “Taken By Force”, but still offers º ³ ³º totally enjoyable moments and a few fierce metal º ³ ³º cuts. It’s easy to criticize them for following º ³ ³º a wrong direction and trying to emulate what º ³ ³º popular 80’s glam acts were doing. Some had no º ³ ³º other chance, like most of the NWOBHM º ³ ³º underground groups that in the end, were dropped º ³ ³º by their record labels (Atlantic, Capitol, and º ³ ³º those famous ones). On other hand, those bizarre º ³ ³º albums give us the chance to listen to the º ³ ³º classic big of metal doing something alternative º ³ ³º and different.
