Â³Âº        It’s a heavier approach we find Ireland’s finest        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        (sorry, U2) rock band swathed in on this effort,        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        having since dispatched guitarist Brian                 Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Robertson (injured in a bar fight, he’d later           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        gone to rattle cages briefly with Motorhead) in         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        favor of Gary Moore. The man’s speed, weight and        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        general all around breathtaking guitar abilities        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        could never be anything but a boon to any band,         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        and this wasn’t the first time Phil Lynott and          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        company had called on him to pinch hit. He’d            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        stepped into the breach on the Bad Reputation           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        tour, and here he is as a full-blown member of          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the Lizzy lineup proper.                                Âº Â³

Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Material wise, it’s another straight shooting           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        collection of material that continues the band’s        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        ever upward spiraling legacy, although fewer and        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        fewer dollars were forthcoming despite the              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        overflowing art on display. A much thicker              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        guitar tone than previous is immediately evident        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        on “Do Anything You Want To,” a rumbling, bass          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        driven number that’s fun, but a shade formulaic         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        by Lizzy’s usually mould-busting standards. The         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        real heat arrives with “Toughest Street In              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Town,” a tale of rough stuff in the city, fueled        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        by Lynott’s visceral visions, and Moore’s               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        relentless shredding. “Waiting For An Alibi” is         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        a great twin-guitar motivated number; featuring         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        some of the band’s most impressive six string           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        layering ever. “My Sarah” is a lovely tune              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Lynott wrote for his young daughter, which is           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        hardly appropriate for snarling rock, so Lizzy          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        appropriately perform this one at half-mast,            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        with melodious solos aplenty.                           Âº Â³

Â³Âº        By this time it must be admitted that the man           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        (Lynott) and the band’s drug addiction was on           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        the brink of seriously addling their collective         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        futures. Thus, the frankness with which said            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        addiction is confronted in “Got To Give It Up”          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        is startling, and would be downright morose, if         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        not for boasting some of the band’s toughest            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        riffs ever. It’s clear that whereas most rock           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        stars saw drug ‘n booze excess as their right,          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Lynott saw it for what it was; a yoke he was            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        sadly not able to walk away from, right up until        Âº Â³
Â³Âº        his death. The far punchier and terse “Get Out          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Of Here” is a humorous detour, and a real               Âº Â³
Â³Âº        relief, while “Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)” is             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        metal greatness galore. Lyrically recalling             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        “Emerald” from the band’s own Jailbreak, it’s           Âº Â³
Â³Âº        another journey into Lynott’s learned Gaelic            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        mind, and boasts some staggering incendiary             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        guitar work from both Moore and longtime Lizzy          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        accomplice Scott Gorham.                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº                                                                Âº Â³
Â³Âº        And so the Lizzy rampage rolls on, bloodied,            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        intoxicated and still in search of a sizable            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        audience. From here, there would be two more            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        albums (Chinatown and Renegade) of varying              Âº Â³
Â³Âº        quality and varying lineups (Moore would split,         Âº Â³
Â³Âº        not being able to handle the heroin, whilst             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        Snowy White and Midge Ure would have brief and          Âº Â³
Â³Âº        odd tenures with the band). But just as the             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        skies were darkest, the heavens crashed and             Âº Â³
Â³Âº        suddenly there was Thunder And Lightning. Go            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        directly to 1983, if you please, for Lizzy’s            Âº Â³
Â³Âº        crushing coda.                                          Âº Â³
