David Wayne’s (R.I.P.) º ³ ³º air raid demon vocals were one-of-a-kind and the º ³ ³º slick, hooky writing and quasi-thrash energy º ³ ³º really won me over. While their follow up The º ³ ³º Dark was widely panned, I loved it almost as º ³ ³º much as the debut. When Wayne packed off for º ³ ³º greener pastures, I was loathe to accept the º ³ ³º band without him, until they wrangled Mike Howe º ³ ³º from Heretic and made stellar use of his leather º ³ ³º lunged roar on the amazing Blessing in Disguise. º ³ ³º I went on to love all the Howe era albums and º ³ ³º struggled mightily to get into subsequent º ³ ³º platters with Ronny Munroe standing in his º ³ ³º stead. Now 23 years after he left, Howe is back º ³ ³º for their 11th album, the cleverly titled XI. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The band he rejoins has certainly rough sailing º ³ ³º since his departure, with 2013s Generation º ³ ³º Nothing being a failed attempt to revisit their º ³ ³º early 80s speed-driven style. It ended up their º ³ ³º worst album (though I’m willing to entertain º ³ ³º arguments Masterpeace deserves that honor) and º ³ ³º things seemed to be over for the long running º ³ ³º act. Could the return of Mr. Howe breathe new º ³ ³º life into this old dog and help restore their º ³ ³º former glory? Well, it certainly can’t hurt º ³ ³º none! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Without knowing what to expect from XI, I was º ³ ³º happy to hear the classic blue collar, hard º ³ ³º rocking sound from albums like The Human Factor º ³ ³º and Hanging in the Balance back again on opener º ³ ³º “Reset.” Howe’s remarkably unchanged bellowing º ³ ³º snarl is out in front of hooky, meaty riffs that º ³ ³º walk a fine line between traditional metal and º ³ ³º hard rock and it feels like old times all over º ³ ³º again. This sets the tone for most of what’s to º ³ ³º come as the band seems content to be themselves º ³ ³º - sometimes going balls out and other times º ³ ³º content to park and idle in hard rock loading º ³ ³º zones. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Mike Howe“Killing Your Time” uses a mid-tempo º ³ ³º chunky riff as the foundation for Howe’s pissed º ³ ³º off, acerbic rants which have just as much bite º ³ ³º as they did back in 93. The album “single” “No º ³ ³º Tomorrow” is the most like classic Metal Church, º ³ ³º sounding as if it was left over from Blessing in º ³ ³º Disguise. “Signal Path” is a very addictive º ³ ³º rocker with an interesting mood and hooky vocal º ³ ³º patterns. “Sky Falls In” is also very catchy º ³ ³º with a winning chorus and a cool, laid back º ³ ³º charm. “Shadow” has the same slithering groove º ³ ³º and swagger as “Hypnotized” off of Hanging in º ³ ³º the Balance and “Soul Eating Machine” is the º ³ ³º perfect fusion of angry, rowdy metal and hard º ³ ³º rock accessibility - all attitude, piss and º ³ ³º vinegar. Lastly, closer “Suffer Fools” is a º ³ ³º wicked stomper with a punky Overkill/Anthrax º ³ ³º feel. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The only song that doesn’t click is “It Waits” º ³ ³º which strives for an ominous and dark atmosphere º ³ ³º but comes across as languid and dull. There are º ³ ³º some minor issues with song length and editing º ³ ³º as well. Several cuts run over 7 minutes and º ³ ³º trimming would definitely increase their impact º ³ ³º (“Killing Your Time,” “Sky Falls In”). That XI º ³ ³º runs just shy of an hour isn’t optimal either, º ³ ³º despite the quality material. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The big surprises here are twofold: one is how º ³ ³º great Mike Howe sounds after nearly 25 years out º ³ ³º of the limelight. He’s lost none of the power in º ³ ³º his mid-range and he can still dial up the venom º ³ ³º quite impressively. He’s more than up to the º ³ ³º task of supplying the necessary balls and º ³ ³º attitude and he does an amazing job here. The º ³ ³º other shocker is how good the song writing is º ³ ³º this time out. I thought the writing quality º ³ ³º took a big nosedive following Hanging in the º ³ ³º Balance and most of the Munroe era albums felt º ³ ³º flat and uninspired, especially Generation º ³ ³º Nothing. This is the first time in a long time º ³ ³º Metal Church founder Kurt Vanderhoof penned a º ³ ³º consistently high quality album with songs that º ³ ³º really dig in and lay earworm larvae. His and º ³ ³º Rick Van Zandt’s riffing is simple but very º ³ ³º engaging throughout, keeping the listener tuned º ³ ³º in and fired up. I’ve always found Vanderhoof’s º ³ ³º playing to be distinctive and classy and he º ³ ³º demonstrates both throughout XI. Add in some º ³ ³º slick drumming by Jeff Plate (Savatage, Trans- º ³ ³º Siberian Orchestra) and you have some genuinely º ³ ³º badass playing from these grizzled bastards. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º This was one of my most anticipated releases of º ³ ³º 2016 and I’m thrilled it came out as solid as it º ³ ³º did. XI is the best and most consistent Metal º ³ ³º Church album since Hanging in the Balance and a º ³ ³º welcome return to ass kicking form. Hell, they º ³ ³º even managed to continue their unbroken run of º ³ ³º truly awful album covers! If you love the older º ³ ³º material, this should be a win, but any fan of º ³ ³º traditional metal will appreciate what’s going º ³ ³º on here.
