It would be very difficult in the º ³ ³º modern metal climate to find a fan who was not º ³ ³º at least a fan of one Finnish band - whether º ³ ³º that be Children of Bodom, Insomnium, Nightwish, º ³ ³º or even Stratovarius. But included in that crop º ³ ³º is also Sonata Arctica, a band that is often º ³ ³º revered as being one of the better contemporary º ³ ³º power/symphonic metal bands there is. Given such º ³ ³º a storied career to this point, it almost seems º ³ ³º hard to believe that they are about to release º ³ ³º their ninth album ‘The Ninth Hour’. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The Ninth Hour travels its journey over 11 º ³ ³º tracks, and from the very first minute you are º ³ ³º treated to a synth-laden welcoming invitation in º ³ ³º the form of ‘Closer to an Animal’. This sets a º ³ ³º tonal mood for the beginning third of the album º ³ ³º which relies on synth, guitars and pure power to º ³ ³º bring something that sounds completely unique º ³ ³º given the current power and symphonic metal º ³ ³º landscape. The remaining two thirds of the album º ³ ³º is an alternation between this style of º ³ ³º power/symphonic metal and the slower, more º ³ ³º quietly attuned ballads that most power. º ³ ³º Musically, this album is quite damn brilliant º ³ ³º and maybe that is where the focus for the band º ³ ³º was this time around. Tracks like ‘Rise A Night’ º ³ ³º and ‘Life’ really shine through with their º ³ ³º faster tempo’s suitably managed to create an º ³ ³º ambient, yet uplifting atmosphere. On the flip- º ³ ³º side, a track like ‘Fly, Navigate, Communicate’ º ³ ³º felt very flat and bland to begin with, until º ³ ³º about the mid-way point where the band kicked º ³ ³º into gear and the song sort of took a Dr Jekyll º ³ ³º and Mr Hyde approach and it seemed like the º ³ ³º first half was written by somebody completely º ³ ³º different. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The Track placement on the album seems very well º ³ ³º thought out, as there are a number of songs º ³ ³º those chains together to create a very vivid º ³ ³º landscape for the album. The initial transition º ³ ³º from ‘Closer to an Animal’ to ‘Life’ is one such º ³ ³º example with its very up-tempo and revivifying º ³ ³º nature imbuing listeners with a sense of º ³ ³º purpose, but this in general is reflective of º ³ ³º the greater musical power of the album. Tracks º ³ ³º like ‘Fairytale’ and ‘Till Death’s Done us º ³ ³º Apart’ stand out as clear cut winners on the º ³ ³º album with their powerful musical composition, º ³ ³º vocal delivery and guitar work. While on the º ³ ³º flip-side ballad tracks ‘Candle Lawns’ and º ³ ³º ‘Among The Shooting Stars’ take a very º ³ ³º introspective and self-searching tone that º ³ ³º heightens the emotional connection that many º ³ ³º will have with these tracks. Given that the band º ³ ³º does excel at a few different styles of songs, º ³ ³º the careful placement of their ballads in the º ³ ³º track listing is beautiful as it treats fans to º ³ ³º a pretty rounded and ‘complete’ album. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Probably my biggest issue overall is that it º ³ ³º seems like vocalist Tony Kakko doesn’t take any º ³ ³º major risks on this offering. I’m not here to º ³ ³º say that he has to, or that he should, but when º ³ ³º you are on your ninth album most of the time you º ³ ³º don’t want to give the impression that you are º ³ ³º just ‘going through the motions’, and the º ³ ³º easiest way to do that is to take risks. Quite º ³ ³º often I found myself looking for that massive º ³ ³º power that I know his voice is capable of, but º ³ ³º found it being absent on most occasions. It’s º ³ ³º such a shame when the lyrical themes are so º ³ ³º strong on many songs that they would have º ³ ³º benefited from having some further power behind º ³ ³º their delivery. One thing that deserves a º ³ ³º special mention from this album is the guitar º ³ ³º work of Elias Viljanen. On several tracks the º ³ ³º man lays down blistering solo after blistering º ³ ³º solo that just embody not only the power and º ³ ³º symphonic metal genres, but melodic metal genres º ³ ³º in general. Several times I found myself º ³ ³º completely dumbfounded by what he had conjured º ³ ³º up, and it really speaks volumes when you have º ³ ³º fans waiting in anticipation for that moment º ³ ³º where they can just listen to a brilliant º ³ ³º guitarist unleash. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and it hits a º ³ ³º lot of marks that most albums in the º ³ ³º ‘symphonic/power’ genre miss these days. With º ³ ³º that being said, I still found that it missed an º ³ ³º integral piece that would have propelled it from º ³ ³º being a ‘good’ album to a ‘great’ album. There º ³ ³º are a lot of good songs on here but nothing that º ³ ³º really gripped me as being revolutionary which º ³ ³º made the album a little underwhelming in places, º ³ ³º while redeeming it in others. I’m not by any º ³ ³º stretch of the imagination saying that this is a º ³ ³º terrible album, because those comments couldn’t º ³ ³º be further from the truth - but I do think that º ³ ³º more could be done to expand on this sound given º ³ ³º the current crop of power and symphonic metal º ³ ³º bands.s º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Is this a good album? Sure it is, but to those º ³ ³º that aren’t already fans, the album doesn’t do a º ³ ³º whole lot to draw and engage them in. While º ³ ³º composed and written beautifully, with sublime º ³ ³º guitar passages included, it feels like most of º ³ ³º the songs just ‘plot the course’ and don’t º ³ ³º really channel massive effort and power that º ³ ³º might engage new fans.
