As the one and only album & º ³ ³º tour to feature lead vocalist Graham Bonnet, it º ³ ³º also marked the last hurrah for drummer Cozy º ³ ³º Powell (and in fact this was his last show with º ³ ³º the band), who left the band to play with the º ³ ³º Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, and Black º ³ ³º Sabbath. With a line-up that of course also º ³ ³º featured lead guitarist extraordinaire Ritchie º ³ ³º Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, and keyboard º ³ ³º maestro Don Airey (the latter now both together º ³ ³º in Deep Purple), the band are in fine form here º ³ ³º in front of an enormous crowd of pumped up º ³ ³º metalheads. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Let's start with the good; the CD portion of º ³ ³º this set looks to feature most of Rainbow's set º ³ ³º that day at Donington, but with the limitations º ³ ³º of the format, only about 80 minutes could fit º ³ ³º onto the disc, so "Man on a Silver Mountain" and º ³ ³º "Love's No Friend" have been omitted, which is º ³ ³º kind of a shame, instead giving way to a lot of º ³ ³º solos and jamming. However, there are KILLER º ³ ³º renditions of "Eyes of the World", "Stargazer", º ³ ³º "Catch the Rainbow", and "All Night Long", which º ³ ³º sees Bonnet, though no Ronnie James Dio, in fine º ³ ³º form. He especially handles the Dio era material º ³ ³º quite well, and appears to be having an alcohol º ³ ³º fueled blast on the closer "Long Live Rock 'n' º ³ ³º Roll". In fact, he no doubt was having the time º ³ ³º of his life here, playing in front of the º ³ ³º largest crowd of his career, and his between º ³ ³º song banter seemed like he was probably feeling º ³ ³º no pain from all the pre-show partying he was no º ³ ³º doubt partaking in. Blackmore lends his always º ³ ³º masterful talents throughout, delivering some º ³ ³º scorching guitar work on "Difficult to Cure", º ³ ³º "Lost in Hollywood" and of course "Catch the º ³ ³º Rainbow". Powell and Airey also get plenty of º ³ ³º room to shine here, especially the departing º ³ ³º Cozy, who thunders along with incredible º ³ ³º precision, and was certainly missed in this band º ³ ³º going forward, but with their direction into º ³ ³º more commercial waters he wanted to continue to º ³ ³º rock out, and did so elsewhere. The sound º ³ ³º quality of the CD is decent, and like I º ³ ³º mentioned, other than the omission of a few º ³ ³º tracks, it's a very good live Rainbow album from º ³ ³º an often forgotten era of the bands history. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Now, the DVD is another story. At just less than º ³ ³º 30 minutes, it's basically a drastically edited º ³ ³º down version of the show, with snippets of a few º ³ ³º songs, all out of order and with middling video º ³ ³º quality. I'm not sure if the whole concert was º ³ ³º filmed, or if not much has survived the years, º ³ ³º but overall it's pretty unsatisfying, regardless º ³ ³º of how good it is to see this version of the º ³ ³º band in this format. Surprisingly, their cover º ³ ³º of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" is very strong, º ³ ³º and here in it's entirety, but "Catch the º ³ ³º Rainbow" is cut in half, as is "Eyes of the º ³ ³º World", and "Stargazer", "Since You've Been º ³ ³º Gone", and "Lost in Hollywood" are nowhere to be º ³ ³º found. Whether we see more from this concert º ³ ³º released in the future remains to be seen, but º ³ ³º as fun as it is to see the roughly 25 minutes of º ³ ³º this show here, you will be left longing for º ³ ³º more. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Despite that, it's hard to look at this as º ³ ³º anything but a winner, as the Bonnet era of º ³ ³º Rainbow often gets overlooked by the superior º ³ ³º Dio years and the more commercial Joe Lynn º ³ ³º Turner version of the band.
