These º ³ ³º warriors were destined for glory, and they º ³ ³º always would be. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º They were born to rule, and so they did, for º ³ ³º more than a decade. Lighting the Templar flame º ³ ³º high above the clouds, they faced many º ³ ³º challenges, and when steel met steel these brave º ³ ³º paladins conquered all with an unforgiving º ³ ³º blade, riding the storm with the crimson thunder º ³ ³º through the thresholds of time. Blood bound, º ³ ³º they seemed unstoppable and reached the end of º ³ ³º the rainbow with their hearts on fire, ready for º ³ ³º anything. Rosén and Elmgren, two of the best and º ³ ³º most noble warriors of them all, were injured in º ³ ³º battle and decided to part ways with their º ³ ³º brothers, leaving the alliance fragile. Larsson, º ³ ³º one of the first Templars, returned to help º ³ ³º their brothers and Norgren, proficient axeman º ³ ³º and wizard of sound, stepped in for the º ³ ³º charismatic Elmgren. But one day, it all seemed º ³ ³º strange, like there was something missing; they º ³ ³º kept going using any means necessary to do so, º ³ ³º but something had infected them. Their guardian, º ³ ³º Hector, was equally affected and had to step out º ³ ³º of battle to recover. Battered and bruised, they º ³ ³º paused the eternal search for the spirit of true º ³ ³º heavy metal and retired themselves to meditate º ³ ³º and heal. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º And then, one winter later, the Templars got º ³ ³º together once again in the spirit of revolution, º ³ ³º hoping for a powerful return to origins. A º ³ ³º little rusted, they managed to perform better º ³ ³º than their last battles, but this new endeavor º ³ ³º was just a way for them to detoxify from all the º ³ ³º bad omens that were haunting the crusade. This º ³ ³º time, though, they will prove once again that º ³ ³º the Templars of steel were ‘Built to Last’; º ³ ³º their swords are sharper, their minds are º ³ ³º clearer and their hammers are high. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º One of the most beloved and prominent bands of º ³ ³º the new generation of metal is back with full º ³ ³º force. Hammerfall will release their 10th full º ³ ³º length album on November 4th - first one via º ³ ³º Napalm Records -, completing their return to º ³ ³º form started with ´(r)Evolution’ in 2014. º ³ ³º Longtime buddies Joacim Cans and Oscar Dronjak º ³ ³º lead the way once again to an album that will º ³ ³º restore your hope in the band and put Hammerfall º ³ ³º in a place where they never should have left. º ³ ³º Starting strong with “Bring It!”, the band º ³ ³º destroys any skepticism you might have in the º ³ ³º first chords, with Grave Digger-esque guitar º ³ ³º lines and a powerful and pumped chorus. The song º ³ ³º lifts up the spirits and paves the way to other º ³ ³º two great tracks: “Hammer High” and “The Sacred º ³ ³º Vow”, previously released as a lyric video; º ³ ³º “Hammer High” is an absolute anthem of epic º ³ ³º proportions. The very beginning of the song º ³ ³º makes you want to raise your fist and bang your º ³ ³º head, singing along with the characteristic º ³ ³º Hammerfall choir. This is one of those songs º ³ ³º that you know are going to be perfect live, and º ³ ³º will definitely become perennial. “The Sacred º ³ ³º Vow” is a little bit like “Hector’s Hymn” in º ³ ³º terms of sounding like a classic, but actually º ³ ³º missing something else. It is a great and catchy º ³ ³º song with some quotes of old Hammerfall tunes º ³ ³º like “Steel Meets Steel” and “Heeding the Call” º ³ ³º - which is a form of writing that I like very º ³ ³º much - and has one of the simplest, yet most º ³ ³º magnificent part of a song I’ve heard from these º ³ ³º guys in years: ‘fear the sound of metal, the º ³ ³º sweetest sound of all’. Perfect. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º “Dethrone and Defy” speeds up the album and º ³ ³º reminisces some of the denser vibes of the band, º ³ ³º maybe something between what we’ve seen in º ³ ³º ‘Crimson Thunder’ and ‘Threshold’. Riff-driven, º ³ ³º the track maintains the good quality of the º ³ ³º album. The ballad “Twilight Princess” comes º ³ ³º next, and it’s absolutely gorgeuous: starting º ³ ³º with just an acoustic guitar and Joacim Cans’ º ³ ³º voice, the sound builds itself into an emotional º ³ ³º and magical journey to a sad story. Without º ³ ³º exaggeration, this stands as tall as classic º ³ ³º ballads by the band such as “Always Will Be”, º ³ ³º “Remember Yesterday”. It’s obviously not as good º ³ ³º as the transcendental “Glory to the Brave”, but º ³ ³º you get the idea. “Stormbreaker” shows the º ³ ³º traditional vein so beloved in Hammerfall’s º ³ ³º sound, with a marvelous riff and a sped-up º ³ ³º chorus. “Built to Last” is yet another of those º ³ ³º ‘fists up high’ tunes with a cadenced º ³ ³º construction; this song could be easily featured º ³ ³º in ‘Crimson Thunder’. “The Star of Home” is a º ³ ³º faster track with glimpses of power metal, being º ³ ³º one of the happier songs of the album. Joacim º ³ ³º delivers a great performance here, especially at º ³ ³º the chorus, proving that almost 20 years of º ³ ³º activity haven’t hurt his pipes at all. And then º ³ ³º comes “New Breed”; A clear homage to the sound º ³ ³º of Accept, illustrated by the guitar lines and º ³ ³º atmosphere, especially, the song is an ode to º ³ ³º every metal band out there. Please, please, hear º ³ ³º this song as much as you can and absorb the º ³ ³º message: young or old, classic or modern, the º ³ ³º bands and the fans are all the same in the heavy º ³ ³º metal community and all of us support the same º ³ ³º ideas and culture. Closing the album is “Second º ³ ³º to None”, the most epic song of the bunch. Is º ³ ³º slowly builds from a ballad to the darker song º ³ ³º featured in the album, relying heavily in º ³ ³º keyboard arrangements and Joacim’s voice. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As you can see, the Templars of steel rise from º ³ ³º the darkness and slay their demons once and for º ³ ³º all with ‘Built to Last’. Clearly a return to º ³ ³º the classic sound, the band successfully º ³ ³º gathered all the missing elements we loved so º ³ ³º much from the first records and, allied to a º ³ ³º refreshing sensation and the joy to play music º ³ ³º by the band members, turned this into a very, º ³ ³º very good heavy metal album, well worthy of the º ³ ³º Hammerfall name. If you are used to reading my º ³ ³º reviews, you know that I don’t just give away º ³ ³º high ratings, so believe me, ‘Built to Last’ º ³ ³º deserved every point here.
